25 percent import tariff on mobile hurts consumers

“The government should refrain from setting high tariffs on commodities that affect people’s livelihood merely for increased revenues, because the public would then go for other alternatives,” Mohammad Mobna told Mobna news agency.
“The 25 percent tariff should be cut, and the ministry of industries and mines should remove its irrational support for domestic handset production in favor of consumers,” he said.
He said the country will in future join the World Trade Organization and, like other members, will have to cut its import tariffs to less than four percent.
He said one reason that Persian Gulf nations have attracted huge trade has been their doing away with import tariffs.
