First and Second Operators not allowed to adopt 3G: RCRO deputy
“Other mobile phone operators are not permitted to upgrade to 3G until Third Operator has been in operation for two years,” Lotfollah Sabouhi told Mobna news agency.
3G is a new generation of mobile phone network with multimedia capabilities. It is in contrast to GSM technology which transfers voice and information. 3G facilitates high-speed multimedia transfer.
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has set third generation technology (3G) of mobile telephony standards – IMT-2000 – to facilitate growth, increased bandwidth, and support of more diverse applications. For example, GSM (currently most popular cellular phone standard) could deliver not only voice but also circuit-switched data at download speeds up to 14.4 kbps.
To support mobile multimedia applications, however, 3G had to deliver packet-switched data with better spectral efficiency and at far greater speed.
