Mobile sets import tariff’s fate is vague: deputy
“Currently mobile sets import tariff is 25 percent but vendors, importers and relevant guilds believe that this tariff should decrease to five percent in order to prosper the mobile phone market,” Iran Parliaments communication committee head Ali Motahari told Mobna news agency.
“Supply and demand determine mobile set final price because in fact tariff is set to control the prices,” he added.
“Commerce ministrys Article One commission which determines the tariffs, already has decreased mobile set import tariff from 25 percent to 10 percent but this decree has not been ordered for implementation yet,” he said.
“Industries ministry insists on 25 percent mobile sets tariff to protect domestic production. And it should be mentioned that mobile phone production in Iran is a failed program,” Motahari added.
He said that domestic production can not meet the meet the market’s need.
“Last Iranian year (ended March 2008) mobile sets domestic production was not very much, in other word this production can not even meet the demand of a small town,” he said.
