First mobile operator GPRS tender to be announced by end September: telecom official
MCI is Irans first nation wide mobile operator.
“After launching internet service, multi media messaging services (mms) will be offered,” Telecommunication minister deputy Vafa Ghafarian told Mobna news agency.
Mms is a standard for telephony messaging systems that allows sending messages that include multimedia objects (images, audio, video, rich text) and not just text as in Short Message Service (SMS).
GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is communications service which uses packet technology to send data via networks.
“MCI pilot GPRS project is being carried out in Tehran, it is planned to be offered up to 21 September,” he said.
“First operator is completing network coverage to offer this service and testing its quality,” he added.
MCI internet service applicants should participate in the tender take advantage of this service. The service at first would be offered in Tehran and then in other metropolitan cities,” Ghafarian said.
“Offering first operator internet service will be limited, but as the capacity and improvement picks up this restriction would be decrease,” he added.
Radio Communication and Regulation Organization has approved MCI internet service tariff per kilobyte 14.8 rials (less than 1 cent) and per MMS 1000 rials (10 cent).
