UK’s tendency to invest in Iran Telecom

Some sources close to telecom sector have reported that British Telecom is willing to invest in Iran telecommunication.
On the eve of Iran Telecom shares being offered on the Tehran Stock Exchange and country’s mobile phone 3rd Operator tender, some major European and Asian operators have expressed directly or indirectly their wish to participate in the ever-expanding Iranian telecom market.
British Telecom (BT), Britain’s mobile phone virtual network operator, has unofficially announced its intention to appear on the Iranian market.
BT, which started operation in 2004, provides GPRS and GSM services via British Vodafone network.
By June 2007, the no of British mobile phone subscribers was reported as 77,335,000, and mobile phone penetration rate as 127.6%.
BT stands at bottom of table among British operators.
Earlier on, operators such as Russian Megafon, United Arab Emirate’s Ettesalaat and Malaysian TM International had officially announced their intention to invest in Iran’s telecom sector.
The Russian Megafon Operator has already opened an office in Tehran.
Two operators from China have also announced willingness to participate.
Part of Iran Telecom shares will be offered on TSE for price determination on June 11 and the tender to select country’s 3rd Operator will be held next October.
