Country’s high-speed internet penetration rate only four percent: telecom minister deputy

“Of 19 Middle East countries, Iran ranks fifteenth,” Kamal Mahamedpour told Mobna news agency.
“A report by the International Telecommunication Union on its 154 members shows that there are more than four billion mobile and 1.3 billion landline phone users in the world,” he said.
“Internet users form one fourth of world population, while broadband landline penetration rate is six percent worldwide, with the average penetration rates of mobile, landline and the internet standing at 61, 19 and 23 respectively,” he continued.
“The number of mobile phones in the world is three times that of landline phones, and 40 percent of European and five percent of African countries have access to the internet,” he said.
“According to ITU figures, of 154 ITU members, Iran ranked 92 and 78 in 2002 and 2007 respectively,” he said.
“In Iran, internet penetration rate is 34.9 percent while high-speed internet penetration rate is four percent,” he added.
“ICT share of GDP in 2000 and 2004 were 1.5 and 2.4 percent respectively while the world average stood at 7.5 percent,” he said.
